Averett's Justin Pierce, right, scored a career-high 22 points on Monday night.

Box Score

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett let a win slip through its fingers in the final minutes in a 77-69 loss to Greensboro College on Monday night at the Grant Center.

Averett (2-19, 0-8 USA South) used an 13-5 run to break a tie and take a 63-55 lead with 5:51 to play. But that eight-point lead was quickly erased by Greensboro (10-8, 4-3 USA South) thanks to back-to-back three-point plays and a pair of free throws in less than a three-minute span. Turnovers and missed shots plagued Averett in the final minutes as the Pride rallied late.

Greensboro's Damian Dixon scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, and Daren Dexter finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

The loss for Averett spoiled a career night from Justin Pierce, who finished with a personal-best 22 points. Marquis Scott added 16 points and eight rebounds and Kenny Hart had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Greensboro led for a bulk of the first half, building a 26-16 advantage by the 8:56 mark. Pierce and Hart led Averett's comeback as the Cougars used a 16-3 run to take the lead with just under four minutes left in the half. That lead grew to as much as six points before Greensboro free throws trimmed the Cougars' lead to 37-34 at halftime.

Averett will look to rebound from its eighth consecutive loss at Methodist University on Saturday.
