LYNCHBURG, Va. — Averett's adjustments paid off in the second half, but the Cougars couldn't overcome a rough first period in a 99-85 loss at Lynchburg College on Monday night.

Averett (0-5) outscored Lynchburg (5-1) 53-47 in the second half as sophomore Paul Porter, junior Jonathan Setters and freshman Stephen Phinn each netted career highs in points. However, it couldn't make up for the Cougars' turnover woes in the first half. Lynchburg's press and fast-paced tempo led to 17 Averett turnovers before halftime.

The Cougars' turnover woes, coupled with Lynchburg's 3-point shooting helped the Hornets roll to a 52-32 halftime lead.

Although Averett responded with a 5-0 run to start the second half, Lynchburg eventually caught fire to push its lead to as much as 27 midway through the period. Still, the Cougars scrapped their way back into the game. Freshman Sunil Ram's runner cut Averett's deficit to 11 with 1:14 to play, but Averett ran out of time in its comeback attempt.

Porter set a career-high with 15 points to go with his seven rebounds. Setters also matched his career-high as a Cougar with 13 points and Phinn chipped in with a career-high 10 points off the bench. Junior Marquis Scott finished with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Lynchburg's Austin Chillemi led all scorers with 24 points.

Averett returns to action on Wednesday at home against Johnson & Wales University (Charlotte) at 7 p.m.
