GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro College made 12 shots from 3-point range, which proved to be the difference in a 94-86 conference win over Averett on Wednesday night at Hanes Gymnasium.

Greensboro (12-4, 4-0 USA South) erased several deficits with the help of its long-range shooting, then used them to build a lead in which Averett (6-11, 1-4 USA South) couldn't overcome down the stretch.

Averett, which led 40-37 at halftime, watched its lead disappear quickly in the opening minutes of the second half. Greensboro pushed its lead to nine points on a pair of Damien Dixon free throws that made the score 79-70 with five minutes remaining.

The Cougars made one last push, going on a 9-1 run that culminated with a Jeremy Ruffin 3-pointer to cut Greensboro's lead to 80-79 with 2:33 to play. Averett got within one point one more time the rest of the way, but couldn't get over the hump. The Pride hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Greensboro's T.J. Holman led all scorers with 26 points and Dixon added 16 points for the Pride, which made 12 of 23 of its 3-pointers.

Junior Marquis Scott led Averett with 17 points along with eight rebounds. Sophomore Paul Porter had 14 points and 12 rebounds, while juniors Jonathan Setters and Grant Chandler added 13 points each. Junior Nick Ford also tied his season-high with 11 points, as did junior Justin Pierce.

Averett trailed 16-4 early in the first half, but the Cougars fought back to take 21-20 lead on a pair of Porter free throws with 9:03 left before halftime. Averett tried to pad its lead, which reached 10 points, but Greensboro kept up thanks to its 3-point shooting.

The Cougars will look to rebound against Christopher Newport University on Wednesday at the Grant Center.
