DANVILLE, Va. — Averett fell behind early as Christopher Newport University defeated the Cougars 91-72 on Wednesday night at the Grant Center.

Averett (6-12, 1-5 USA South), playing without leading scorer Justin Pierce, couldn't keep up with the Captains, who raced out to a 22-8 lead in the first nine minutes. Christopher Newport (16-3, 7-0 USA South) pushed its lead to as much as 20 in the first half before Averett cut the score to 43-25 by halftime.

Although CNU initially increased its lead in the second half, The Cougars played much better after the break. Averett rattled off six 3-pointers in less than six minutes and seven total in the second half. However, the Captains seemed to answer each with a basket of their own. CNU shot 60.6 percent from the field in the second half, yet Averett only scored one less point than the Captains in the second period.

Mike Cherry and Luc Antangana led CNU with 17 points each.

Junior Jonathan Setters led Averett with 15 points. Junior Grant Chandler, getting his first start, finished with 14 points and junior Marquis Scott added 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Averett will look to rebound when it travels to play Shenandoah University on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Winchester, Va.
