DANVILLE, Va. — After a tight first half, Methodist University pulled away to an 84-61 conference victory over Averett on Sunday afternoon at the Grant Center.
Down 40-37 at halftime, Averett (1-4, 0-2 USA South) went cold on offense after the break, which allowed Methodist (5-2, 2-0 USA South) to open the second period with a 23-5 run and swing control of the game for good to the Monarchs.
It was a far cry from the first half. Althought Methodist briefly led by eight points twice midway through the half, Averett erased that deficit in less than a three-minute span when freshman
Jessica Myers made a steal at midcourt and raced for a fastbreak layup to tie the game at 29-29 with 5:50 to go. After swapping a pair of free throws, Averett took its first lead since the opening minute on two more
Mette Scheiman free throws. The Cougars led by as many as three points multiple times before Methodist scored the final six points of the half to go back in front.
Scheiman scored 18 of her team-high 21 points in the first half. The senior finished with a team-high eight rebounds.
Methodist shot better than 48 percent for the game, including nearly 52 percent in the second half. The Monarchs were led by Christina Schrader's 23 points while Courtney Woods had 12 points off the bench.
Averett freshman
Oneka Jones had a breakout performance with a career-best 10 points, along with six rebounds.
Scheiman, Averett's all-time leading 3-point shooter, increased her record total to 125. On Sunday, she also passed Laura Bowman's record of 397 career 3-point attempts, setting the current record at 401.
Averett will look to end its two-game skid at Salem College on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.
