DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball extended its USA South Conference winning streak to four after knocking off Greensboro College 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Grant Center. The Cougars won 25-14. 24-26, 25-18 and 25-19.
Averett (11-8, 6-1 USA South) opened the match on fire, finishing the opening set with a .519 hitting percentage while overpowering Greensboro (12-7, 4-3 USA South). The Cougars carried that momentum into the second set with an early lead, but it slipped away as Greensboro found its offense, took advantage of Averett's mishaps and stole the second set 26-24.
The Cougars rebounded with wins in the next two sets to put the Pride away.
Freshman
Hannah Shields, who was named the USA South Rookie of the Week on Monday for the third time this season, finished with a double-double of 20 kills and 18 digs. Freshman
Sarah Smoot also had a strong performance with 17 kills. Junior
Katelyn Holley had a team-high 12 digs, while senior
Nicole Barringer totaled 49 assists and nine digs and junior Lindsay Boles chipped in eight digs.
Averett hosts a USA South quad match on Friday, beginning with the Cougars taking on Covenant College at 1 p.m.
