MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Freshman
David Cuperman's second collegiate goal lifted the Averett University men's soccer team to a 1-0 conference victory over Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Averett (3-8, 2-2 USA South) broke a scoreless tie in the 18th minute when sophomore
Tobias Andreasson found Cuperman with a dish and Cuperman fired his shot into the back of the net. The goal came after the Cougars posted four shots in the first 17 minutes of the game.
Â
Despite going down early, Huntingdon (2-7-1, 1-3 USA South) nearly tied the game at the 18:41 mark when Tyler Dejianne had a look on goal but senior goalkeeper
John Matrisciano was up to the challenge, preserving Averett's lead with a big save. A Huntingdon foul in the box gave the Cougars a free look on goal, but the penalty kick attempt went wide of the mark.
Â
Averett's offense created several opportunities throughout the game as the team fired off 19 shots in the contest. Cuperman led the offensive assault with eight attempts, while Andreasson added two for the Cougars. Freshman
Ville Hautakangas chipped in with two attempts of his own.
Â
The Cougars resume conference play on Sunday as they travel to LaGrange, Georgia, to take on the Panthers of LaGrange College at 3:30 p.m.Â
