EMORY, Va. — Freshman Alfonso Jimenez's singles win clinched a 5-4 victory for Averett University men's tennis over Emory & Henry College on Sunday afternoon.

In the deciding match, Jimenez, playing at the No. 5 singles, cruised past Emory & Henry's Jonathan Romano 6-0, 6-0. Averett (1-0) won four of the six singles matches against the Wasps. Junior Nicolas Quevedo beat John Dalton Ferguson 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, while sophomore James Wright beat Kamil Aliev 6-2. 6-0. Sophomore Carlos Lora also was a winner with a victory over Luke Funkhouser at the No. 4 spot by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

JImenez and Quevedo also teamed up for Averett's lone doubles win at the No. 2 spot. The Cougars' duo beat Aliev and Romano 8-1.

The match was Averett's final contest of the non-traditional fall season.
