LaGrange, Ga. — The Averett University women's soccer team pulled out a 4-1 conference win over LaGrange College on Sunday afternoon at Panther Field.
Junior midfielder
Johanna Ohrnberg kickstarted the scoring for Averett (2-7-2, 2-4-1 USA South). Just as it seemed that the team would go into halftime scoreless, Ohrnberg buried a shot off a rebound at 33:10 mark to send the Cougars into the break with a 1-0. With the one-goal lead, Averett stretched the margin early in the second half when sophomore midfielder
Amanda Gustavsson scored a goal in the 50th minute.
Even though LaGrange (4-11, 2-6 USA South) countered Averett with a goal from Paige Smyth, but it wasn't enough to ignite a rhythm for her squad as the Cougars continued to find success on offense. Freshman forward
Skye Gunn nailed the ball into the net on an assist from Gustavsson to put Averett up 3-1, and Gustavsson later fired the ball between the posts for her second goal of the day with the feed coming from freshman
Eimear Reddin.
"We worked hard to get a lot of crosses and shots on goal. The more reps then the more chances to be able to score," Averett head coach
Sarah Chapman said. "We finished well today, which has been a challenge for us in our past games."
The Cougars continue conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 14 against Ferrum College on the road at 5 p.m.
