Men's tennis loses tight match with Guilford

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's tennis team lost its spring season opener to Guilford College in a close 5-4 contest on Saturday afternoon at the Averett Tennis Courts.
 
Junior Alexander Terentiev and freshman James Wright teamed up to win their No. 2 doubles match 8-5. Trailing 2-1 after doubles play, Averett (1-1 got three wins in singles but fell short overall. Sophomore Nicholas Quevedo hung on in three sets to outperform Guilford's Trevor Cox 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 in the No. 2 singles match. Next, Terentiev took down Eric Meiler 6-4, 6-1 for his second win of the day. Freshman Carlos Lora claimed his first win of the season in the No. 4 singles match after beating Mesa Martorell 6-3, 7-5.
 
The Cougars return to action on March 6 when they travel to play Hampden-Sydney College in a rescheduled game from earlier this season.
