DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University football head coach
Cleive Adams and recruiting coordinator/offensive line coach
Patrick Henry are headed to the slammer. But it's for a good cause.
In support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Adams and Henry will become "MDA Jailbirds" on July 14 to help raise money for the organization, which is dedicated to curing conditions such as muscular dystrophy or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease.
It was the desire to give back to the Danville community through service that inspired the two coaches to participate.
"What inspired me to get involved with the MDA Lockup was the desire to get as involved with the city of Danville through the community service aspect as possible," Adams said.
According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association's website, participants — also known as jailbirds — are locked up for an hour. Once behind bars, participants can only be released once they raise enough donations to meet their bail.
"I'm excited to represent Averett University," Henry said. "It's a great cause, and I look forward to contributing to it."
Adams and Henry's bail is set at $2,000 and the two will count on donations from local business and community leaders along with individual donations to help release them from lockup. Donations only take a second to make and the funds raised will assist MDA in finding treatment and cures, supporting families with life-enhancing programs and resources, and will encourage community support to fight against muscular diseases.
