DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University women's soccer team clinched a 6-0 conference shutout over Mary Baldwin College on Wednesday afternoon to give the Cougars its first win of the season, and the victory marks
Sarah Chapman's first win as Averett's head coach.
Junior
Johanna Ohrnberg and freshman
Skye Gunn led the frontline for the Cougars with two goals apiece. Gunn got the offensive rhythm started for Averett with her first collegiate goal at the 5:29 mark. The freshman forward ran up the center to boot the ball into the net on a feed inside the box from Ohrnberg. After her assist, Ohrnberg netted a ball of her own from 25 yards out on the left side in the 12th minute.
Averett (1-6-1, 1-3-0 USA South) took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period and kept up their momentum in the second half, notching three goals in just one minute and 16 seconds to open the half.
One significant difference between today's game and previous games was Averett's ability to finish break-away opportunities, which has been a focus for Chapman. Both Ohrnberg and Gunn scored on fast breaks in the second period.
"We had our chances early, and we got it done. This was a good confidence win for us," Chapman said.
Sophomore midfielder
Amanda Gustavsson also scored a goal for the Cougars as junior midfielder
Melissa Sanchez and freshman midfielder
Kylie McKeen dished out one assist each.
Mary Baldwin (3-5-0, 0-5-0 USA South) couldn't keep the Cougars away from scoring range throughout the game and struggled to maintain possession of the ball. Averett took a total of 34 shots with 21 on goal while the Fighting Squirrels only managed to get off three shots.
Averett returns to action this weekend for a string of conference matchups. The Cougars head to Greensboro, North Carolina, for the first of five consecutive away games, starting with Greensboro College on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.
