Men's tennis takes down Guilford in non-conference match

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Averett University men's tennis defeated non-conference foe Guilford College 6-3 on Friday afternoon.

Averett (5-1) earned wins at the top two doubles positions to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead in the match. Sophomore James Wright and freshman Oliver Lindqvist edged the Guilford duo of Erik Meiler and Aaron Smedley 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Junior Nicolas Quevedo and freshman Abdugani Ganiev teamed up to win 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

The Cougars clinched the match against the Quakers by winning four of six in singles play, including the top three positions. At No. 1, Lindqvist topped Meiler 7-5, 6-4. Quevedo pulled off a comeback win in three sets, while Wright and Ganiev each won in straight sets.

The Cougars return to action at conference foe Greensboro College on Sunday.
