Regionally ranked N.C. Wesleyan defeats women's tennis

DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University women's tennis team came up short in a 7-2 loss to conference foe N.C. Wesleyan College on Tuesday evening at the Averett Tennis Courts.

Averett (2-5, 0-2 USA South) went into singles play down only 2-1 after sophomore Hannah Mattson and freshman Heidi Sarkkinen beat Valeria Berber and Stephany Barbera 8-6 in No. 1 doubles. The duo has only lost one match this season.

Sarkkinen claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win again over Berber in singles play to remain undefeated as a solo competitor.  No. 9 N.C. Wesleyan (5-3, 4-1 USA South) earned the next five wins to take the conference win, but sophomore Jordyn Minton fought to keep her match going. She bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second set after falling 6-2 in the first to Leigh Hales. Minton battled in the third set, stretching the match, but she fell short 12-10.

Averett returns to action when it travels to Georgia on Saturday, March 19, to face Covenant College in conference action at 10 a.m.
