DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball dropped a pair of matches to open play at the Christopher Newport University Invitational on Friday. The Cougars fell to No. 15 CNU 3-0, then lost a tough 3-2 match against the University of Scranton.
Averett (7-5) finished day with a five-set battle against Scranton (7-4). Scranton held off the Cougars 25-23, 24-26, 26-24, 23-25, 15-10. Juniors
Hannah Shields and
Sarah Smoot each had double-doubles in the loss, with Shields totaling team-highs of 24 kills and 17 digs and Smoot recording 14 kills and 14 digs. Freshman
Brianna Williams also had double-digit kills with 13 to go with four blocks. In total, six Cougars had double-digit dig totals as junior
Christiana Summa had 16, sophomore
Emily Stanley at 14, junior
Lynsey Corriher had 13 and junior
Jordyn Minton had 12. Corriher also had 43 assists.
Earlier in the day, host CNU beat Averett 25-20, 25-22, 25-19. Shields had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, followed by Smoot's eight kills. Summa also tallied 13 digs and sophomore
Keenan Marks had 23 assists.
Averett faces CNU and Scranton again on Saturday.
