Woody goes undefeated in pair of wrestling duals

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Averett University men's wrestling team competed at the Washington and Lee University Duals on Monday. The Cougars dropped their first dual of the day to Lycoming College, 46-7, before falling to Olivet College in the nightcap, 44-3.

Against Lycoming, Averett got off to an early lead in the dual, jumping out to a 7-0 advantage after the first two bouts. Freshman Sam Braswell continued his strong start to his rookie campaign by claiming victory over Shane Casey by major decision, 11-3. Fellow freshman Brandon Woody carried this momentum into his match at 133 pounds against Lycoming's Jacob Chamberlin. Woody kept Chamberlin at bay throughout the bout, winning by decision 9-4. Unfortunately, Averett was unable to win another bout in the dual and fell to Lycoming, 46-7.

The Cougars wrapped up the tournament by facing off with Olivet and would end up dropping this dual, 44-3, with the lone Averett win coming at 133 pounds in the form of Woody. The Chesterfield, Virginia native led going into the third period 6-5, and Olivet's Kaleb Marion chose to start period three on top. At this point, Woody was able to escape and score a takedown to help pull away for the 9-7 victory.

The Cougars return to competition on Thursday, Dec. 21, when they travel to Richmond, Virginia to go up against Greensboro College in dual action.
