DANVILLE, Va. — Marymount University defeated the Averett University baseball team in both games of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field. The Saints took the first game 3-1 and defeated the Cougars 11-4 in the nightcap.
Tied 0-0 in the top of the third inning of the first game, Marymount (2-0) notched one of their runs before a pitching change to give them a 1-0 lead on the Cougars. A bases-loaded walk gave the Saints the third tally in the game to give them a 3-0 lead against Averett.
Averett (1-5) recorded its first run in the bottom of the fifth to cut its deficit to two. With runners on first and third base, senior catcher
Trey Wall scored on a ground out to the short stop by junior
Dallas Smithers to make the final score 3-1. The Cougars had a chance to trim Marymount's lead even more, but a strikeout ended the rally in the fifth.

In game 2, Marymount scored first to give them a 1-0 advantage when Stephen Berczek scored on a wild pitch. The Cougars responded by also scoring their first run on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1. In the third inning, Averett tacked on a run when sophomore
A.J. Hart singled up the middle to score Smithers and put Averett ahead 3-1. Marymount answered in the fourth and fifth innings, bringing its lead to 4-3 after Brandon Savage doubled to left field scoring Lorenzo Calderon.
The Cougars didn't give up just yet, scoring Smithers off of freshman
Chase McKinney's triple down the left field line that knotted the game 4-4. In the seventh inning, the Saints settled in scoring seven runs to make it an 11-4 game. Brandon Orbe scored off a wild pitch to start the momentum for Marymount.
Smithers, McKinney and Hart all led the Cougars with two hits apiece while junior

Averett will travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, to take on Guilford College at 1 p.m. in non conference action.
