Men's tennis falls in spring opener at No. 38 Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Va. — Averett University men's tennis battled with 38th-ranked Washington and Lee University, but the Generals' success in singles play helped them edge Averett 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

Averett (2-1) started strong, taking two of the three doubles matches. Freshmen Lauri Soome and Caius Blomqvist teamed up for an 8-6 win over Will Bannister and Jordan Krasner at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Nicolas Yanes and junior James Wright also won at No. 2 doubles, topping Zack Ely and Justin Gillette 8-6.

Washington and Lee (1-0), however, took five of the six singles matches to rally back for the win. Averett's lone victory in singles play came at the No. 6 spot as Yanes defeated Gillette 6-3, 6-1.

The match was Averett's first this spring. The Cougars return to the court at home Sunday against Guilford College at 1 p.m.
