LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Averett University softball team snagged two victories over LaGrange College in conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars claimed the first win 10-1 in six innings and defeated the Panthers 9-2 in the second game.
Averett (15-13, 7-3 USA South) got off 13 hits to help the squad sail to a quick win in the first matchup. The Cougars started off strong with a 4-0 lead by the end of the third frame. LaGrange (5-15, 4-8 USA South) scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth before the Cougars tacked on six more runs in the fifth inning alone. Sophomore outfielder
Essence Pulliam and senior shortstop
Jessica Long notched a triple and a double, respectively, that ran in two runners to extend the Cougars' commanding lead. Long finished 3-for-4.
Freshman
Taylor Bailey claimed the pitching win to improve her record to 8-6. She also went 2-for-3 from the batter's box as did
Nicole Cauthen and
Casey Cook.
In the second game, the Panthers led the Cougars 1-0 up until the top of the fifth. Freshman pitcher
Kaitlyn Aherron hit a 2 RBI double to put the Cougars ahead by one, and in the next frame, Averett piled on five more runs. Aherron came up big for the Cougars again. She hit a grand slam that stretched Averett's advantage to 7-1 as the Cougars would put up two more runs in the final inning.
Aherron finished 3-for-4 with seven RBIs and also snagged the win from the pitching circle to improve her record to 6-5.
Averett returns to the field on Tuesday to take on N.C. Wesleyan College on the road for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
