Men's tennis edged by regionally ranked Methodist in USA South opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett University men's tennis dropped its conference opener to regionally ranked Methodist University 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.

Averett (3-2, 0-1 USA South) had the upper hand through doubles play after the Cougars won two of the three matches. Freshmen Caius Blomqvist and Lauri Soome won their No. 1 doubles matchup 8-3, while senior Nicolas Quevedo teamed with sophomore Abdugani Ganiev for an 8-3 three at the No. 3 spot.

Methodist (4-0, 1-0 USA South), ranked 11th in the region, battled back to take four of the six singles matches to steal the win. For of the six singles matches also went three sets. Averett's two singles wins game at No. 2 and No. 3. Soome rallied to top Methodist's Jacob Oesher 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Junior James Wright held off Wynn Johnson 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Averett travels to N.C. Wesleyan College on Sunday.
