Women's soccer earns draw with Southern Virginia

DANVILLE, Va.— The Averett University women's soccer team (2-1-2) picked up its second draw of the season at home Saturday night to Southern Virginia University, 1-1. Junior Kaitlyn Barbour scored the lone goal for the Cougars, her first of the season.

Each team struggled to find their respective offensive games in the first five minutes of the match, but in the ninth minute the Cougars ramped up their attack and forced a Southern Virginia defender to commit a foul inside her own penalty box. Barbour stepped up and buried her PK attempt to give Averett the early lead.

The Knights kept the deficit at one and received a free kick in the 20th minute of the match. The Knights played a high flying ball inside the box that junior goalkeeper Bailee Brown mishandled that allowed Alli Rigby to clean up the loose ball and bring the game level. The Knights out shot Averett 4-1 in the last 25 minutes of the first half, but could not convert and both teams were tied at halftime.

In the first 30 minutes of the second half, Southern Virginia was putting a great amount of pressure on the Cougar back line which resulted in five shots for the Knights to Averett's one. Three of Southern Virginia's opportunities within this time frame forced a save from Brown.

Neither team could find the back of the net during the remaining time of regulation and the match entered overtime.

Both teams tightened up defensively in the first overtime period not allowing the other side to create many opportunities. The score was still even heading into the second overtime.

Southern Virginia controlled the pace of the second overtime and it turned into three shots and a corner kick for the Knights. However, they were not able to capitalize on their scoring chances and the game ended in a tie.

The Cougars back in action tomorrow when they travel to Lexington, Virginia to take on Washington and Lee University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
