Volleyball cruises to three-set wins over Mount St. Joseph, Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Averett University volleyball rolled past the College of Mount St. Joseph and host Maryville College with a pair of 3-0 victories to finish play at the Maryville Invitational on Saturday.
 
Averett (10-2) opened the day with a sweep of Mount St. Joseph (8-3), winning 25-22, 25-20 and 25-15. The Cougars used big runs early in the first two games to set the tone, and finished it by hitting .385 as a team the final frame. Senior Hannah Shields got the match-clinching kill to help complete her double-double of 13 kills and 24 digs. Seniors Sarah Smoot and Lynsey Corriher, along with sophomore Brianna Williams, each had seven kills. Freshman McKenzie Miller and junior Keenan Marks totaled 15 assists and 14 assists, respectively, and junior Emily Stanley chipped in with nine digs.
 
The Cougars finished off a perfect Maryville Invitational by beating the host school Maryville (3-7) and conference foe in a non-conference matchup. Averett won 25-20, 25-19, 25-20. The Cougars separated themselves in each of the three sets with good runs midway through.
Smoot led Averett's attach with 14 kills, followed by Shields with 13 kills and Williams with 11. Stanley had a team-high 20 digs and Shields added 13. Marks led the setters with 18 assists while Miller had 14.

Shields earned Maryville Invitational MVP honors, and Smoot joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
 
Averett opens conference play on Wednesday when the Cougars play host to Mary Baldwin University at 7 p.m.
