Men's soccer edged in overtime by Greensboro

DANVILLE, Va.— The Averett University men's soccer team (2-4-1) had their losing streak extended to two after falling to Greensboro College in overtime, 4-3. Junior David Cuperman recorded a hat-trick with all of his tallies coming on set pieces.

An action packed first half, which featured five total goals, was sparked by a Greensboro goal in the 19th minute. A free kick on the near side of the field was served into the Cougar box where it was unfortunately headed into the Averett goal by a Cougar defender for an own goal. Each side traded a chance on net before the Cougars received a free kick of their own in the 28th minute of play. Cuperman took the set piece right outside the box and put it past the keeper and inside the far post to bring the game even.

The Pride responded very quickly as Gerardo Peraza put his team ahead for the second time in the match just six minutes later.  The back and forth action continued as the Cougars answered on the other end of the field, but this time in defiant fashion. In the span of three minutes, the Cougars received two free kicks and Cuperman put both of them into the back of the net to give Averett their first lead of the day at 3-2. The scored stayed in favor of the Cougars heading into halftime.

The Pride came out of the break in action hungry for the equalizer as they created five scoring chances in the first 15 minutes of the second half. The last one came in the 64th minute, which Jacob Owens put past freshman goalkeeper Marius Olavesen to bring the match level.

Both sides struggled offensively down the home stretch of regulation as neither could find the back of the net with the game entering overtime. However, just 39 seconds into the first overtime period, Gerardo Peraza struck twine for the second time in the match to help The Pride come out victorious, 4-3.

Averett is back in action in less than 24 hours as they play host to Covenant College on Saturday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
