DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team couldn't quite complete the comeback on its Senior Day, falling 3-2 to Methodist University on Saturday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
The Monarchs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first 18 minutes, proving to be to big of a hole for the Cougars the climb out of. Averett (4-10, 2-3 USA South) scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to keep it competitive, but Methodist (6-8, 2-3 USA South) fended off the valiant comeback attempt.
Methodist's Capri Clark was the difference maker, using good ball skills to weave her way through the defense to score two of the Monarchs' three goals. Sierra Swasey scored the other Methodist goal on a penalty kick.
The seniors showed up for Averett with seven minutes left in the half as
Linnea Meyer blasted it from behind midfield to
Eimear Reddin, who finished it from the 18-yard box for her first goal of the season with seven minutes left in the first half. The next goal came with just 17 second left in the half, as Reddin took a corner kick and about three different Cougars got shots on the goal before freshman
Adriana Perez finally finished it for her team-leading third goal of the year to cut the lead, 3-2.
After a busy first half, the second half was scoreless but competitive. Senior Nani Ventura had a 1-on-1 look against the goalkeeper with 11 minutes remaining in the game, but couldn't quite finish. With possession split most of the game, Methodist marginally outshot Averett, 15-13, on the game.
The Cougars finish their season with two road games, starting with William Peace University on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
