Fayetteville, N.C. – The Averett University women's tennis team competed at Methodist University in a round robin that also included Salem College on Saturday.
The tournament was originally the Methodist Invitational, but was postponed to this past weekend due to Hurricane Florence. Averett saw four of its six players -- seniors
Heidi Sarkkinen and
Ashley Thornton, sophomore
Eleanor Crane and freshman
Kristina Hedelt -- come away with a 2-0 record. Freshmen
Inka Zeilstra and
Rainey Townsend each earned a 1-1 record on the weekend. Averett also went 3-3 in doubles play.
Sarkkinen's hot streak continued as she came away with an 8-3 win over Methodist's Ashton Walker and an 8-2 win over Salem's Makenna Mason. Crane also had a dominant outing, winning 8-1 over Methodist's Jessica Tucker and 8-0 over Salem's Abby Williams. Thornton won both of her games, 8-3, with victories over the Monarchs' Allyson Hays and the Spirits' Alyssa Cosentino. The last of the Cougars with a 2-0 outing was Hedelt, who earned an 8-3 victory over Methodist's Abby Siracusa and an 8-0 shutout over Salem's Ommunique Smith.
Both of Averett's lone singles losses came against Methodist, as Zeilstra suffered a close 8-6 loss against Taylor Jackson and Townsend lost to Sydney Lewis, 8-1. Each bounced back against Salem, though, as Zeilstra came away with an 8-4 win against Grace Wilson and Townsend earned an 8-4 victory over Carmen Wilkens.
