GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Averett University men's tennis team won 6-3 in a non-conference matchup against Guilford College on Sunday afternoon at the McMichael Centennial Class Courts.
Averett (1-1) got off to a strong start with three wins in the doubles matches, collecting points from sophomore Nicolas Yanes and junior Abdugani Ganiev 8-4 victory at the No. 1 spot. Freshmen Douwe Sternfield and partner Felipe Andreazza won a close match 9-8 at No. 2 doubles. At No.3 doubles sophomore Mathias Reusch and freshman Thomas Woodcock won the last match 8-6.
Later on, the Cougars claimed three wins in the singles matches, including Andreazza's 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 2 singles and Sternfield's 6-1, 6-3, victory at No. 3 singles. Lastly, freshman Henry Blanco would get the last win of the day for the Cougars at the No.6 spot with a 6-2,6-0 score.
Guilford (2-1) won three matches in singles play.
Averett will go on the raod to Hampden-Sydney, Virginia to face Hampden-Sydney College on March 1st at 3 p.m.
