HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — Averett University men's tennis edged non-conference foe Hampden-Sydney College 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Douwe Sternfeld's victory at No. 3 singles clinched the match for the Cougars.
Sternfeld topped William Driskill 6-1, 3-6, 7-5, in the deciding battle. Averett also got singles wins from freshman Felipe Andreazza at the No. 2 spot and senior Carlos Lora at No. 5 singles.
Averett (4-1) won two of three doubles matches against Hampden-Sydney (4-2). The duo of Andreazza and Sternfeld knocked off Clark Cummings and Driskill at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-6. Sophomore Mathias Reusch and freshman Thomas Woodcock also picked up a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.
Averett, winners of three in a row, host conference foe William Peace University on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
