FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Averett University men's tennis team dropped their first conference match of the season at Methodist University, 6-3.
At the conclusion of doubles matches, Averett (5-2, 2-1 USA South) led 2-1 in the match with the Cougars claiming victory at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Nicolas Yanes and junior Abdugani Ganiev won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles while freshman Thomas Woodcock and sophomore Mathias Reusch also won by an 8-6 score line at No. 3 doubles.
Methodist (5-5, 1-2 USA South) won at No. 1 and No. 4 singles to take a 3-2 lead in the match. However, the Cougars would respond with a win at No. 3 singles in the form of freshman Douwe Sternfeld. The Haarlem, Netherlands, product won in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) to tie the match at three.
Unfortunately, the Cougars would fall in the remaining matches and drop the rematch with the Monarchs, 6-3.
Averett is back in action on Sunday when the Cougars travel to take on N.C. Wesleyan College. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
