WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Averett University women's tennis defeated conference foe Salem College 5-4 on Monday afternoon.
Averett (5-5, 2-2 USA South) trailed Salem (6-6, 3-2 USA South) by a 2-1 margin after doubles play. The Cougars picked up their only doubles win at the No. 1 spot as senior Hannah Mattson and junior Heidi Sarkkinen rolled to an 8-0 win.
Despite the one-point deficit, Averett won four of the six singles matches to clinch the conference victory. Sarkkinen and Mattson won in straight sets at the top singles spots, respectively. Freshman Eleanor Crane also won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Junior Ashley Thornton also picked up a win at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.
Averett hosts Mary Baldwin University on Tuesday.
