DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team had their two game winning streak come to an end as the Cougars fell 8-2 to Pfeiffer University on Friday afternoon.
Â
After each side went scoreless in the first inning, Pfeiffer (11-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI-groundout from Damon Smith. Averett (5-14) would bring the game back to even in the second inning. Freshman Ryan Traylor drew a leadoff walk before two groundouts moved him to third. Senior Bradley Tickle drove him in with his RBI-single up the middle.
Â
The Falcons would take the lead for good in the top of the fifth as they scored four runs by way of a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer to left field. The Cougars would get one back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the score to 5-2. Freshman Nick Taylor led off the inning with a single to to center field. The shortstop would eventually come around to score before Averett loaded the bases with one out. Unfortunately, the Falcons worked out of this jam and preserved their three run lead.
Â
Pfeiffer would pull away for the victory as they collected two runs in the seventh and one run in the ninth for the 8-2 win.
Â
Tickle finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Sophomore Alex Ansted made his first start of the season as the Cornelius, North Carolina native went four innings, giving up one earned run and three hits to go along with a strikeout.
