MISENHEIMER, N.C. — The Averett University men's tennis team won 5-4 at Pfeiffer University on Tuesday.
Freshman Thomas Woodcock clinched the match for Averett (13-5) with his win at No. 6 singles. The Southampton, England, native dropped the second set to Ethan Elliott of Pfeiffer (12-4), 6-3, after taking set one 6-2. Woodcock would not falter as he won 6-4 in set three to preserve the 5-4 victory for the Cougars and his fifth singles win of the season.
Averett put themselves in good position heading into singles play by winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Sophomore Nicolas Yanes and freshman Henry Blanco won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles while Woodcock and sophomore Mathias Reusch were victorious at No. 3 doubles by an 8-5 score.
The freshman pair of Felipe Andreazza and Douwe Sternfeld claimed victory at No. 2 singles (5-4, retired) and No. 3 singles (6-4, 7-6) respectively to help lift Averett to the 5-4 win.
Men's tennis heads to LaGrange, Georgia, this weekend for the USA South Conference Tournament as the Cougars face Piedmont College on Friday in the quarterfinals. The match is set to start at 2 p.m.
