RALEIGH, N.C. — The Averett University men's tennis completed a 9-0 sweep of William Peace University on Tuesday.
Averett (9-4, 4-2 USA South) was paced by a strong start to the match in doubles play with the Cougars defeating the Pacers in each match. The closest margin of victory for Averett came at No. 1 doubles as sophomore Nicolas Yanes and freshman Henry Blanco claimed an 8-4 win. Senior Carlos Lora and freshman Trevor Ramagos won at No. 2 doubles (8-1) and then freshman Alvaro Jimenez and sophomore Jon Smith kept the sweep intact with an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Cougars won each singles match in straight sets with the exception of the match at No. 1 singles. Freshman Douwe Sternfeld won the first set 7-6, but Dylan Betancourt of William Peace (6-9, 3-6 USA South) brought the match level with a 6-3 win in set two. The third set was tightly contested as Sternfeld squeaked out a 13-11 victory. Blanco, sophomore Mathias Reusch, Ramagos, Jimenez and Smith each won their respective singles match to lead Averett to the 9-0 win.
Men's tennis returns to action on Saturday as the Cougars are scheduled for a tripleheader at home starting with a morning matchup with Greensboro College. That match is set to start at 9 a.m.
