FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Averett University men's tennis doubles tandem of sophomores
Thomas Woodcock and
Henry Blanco won the ITA Regionals Flight B championship to highlight the Cougars' play on Saturday.
Woodcock and Blanco defeated Muhlenberg College's Alexander Dagilis and Noah Dunn in the Flight B doubles championship by a score of 8-2. Woodcock and Blanco advanced to the finals after taking down Dickinson College's Vincent Tovar Dias and Bryce Perritt Saturday morning in the semifinals.
Woodcock and Blanco advanced to Saturday with a pair of wins Friday. They upset the No. 3 seeded tandem of Bridgewater College's Sonet Gandhi and Nathan Horner, 8-2, in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Woodcock and Blanco beat Catholic University's Matt Pham and Kyle Weber, 8-2, in the first round.
Sophomore
Simon Levinsson and freshman
Patrick Shields, the No. 10 seeded duo, lost 8-4 in the semifinals to the third-seeded duo of Derek Chen and Justin Pace from Dickinson who went on to win the Flight A doubles championship.
In singles play, Shields opened Flight B singles play with two wins on Friday, but he fell 6-3, 6-3, to Christopher Newport University's James Baron in the semifinals on Saturday.
Woodcock dropped his opening singles match on Friday in the Flight A singles draw. In the Flight A consolation bracket, Woodcock advanced to the consolation semifinals when he beat Haverford College's Pranav Krishnan, 6-4, 6-4. There, Woodcock beat Wilkes University's Jonathan White 7-5, 7-5. However, Woodcock lost 8-2 to Christopher Newport's William Trang in the consolation championship.
