DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Bridgewater College on Tuesday night.
Averett (0-3) and Bridgewater (3-0) played a tightly contested first half with each side creating offensive chances in their attacking thirds. The Eagles led in shots (9-4) while the Cougars had the advantage in corners (5-3). However, neither side could put their chances into the back of the net with the match being scoreless at the halftime break.
The Eagles wasted no time in taking the match's first lead as Bridgewater struck twine just 22 seconds into the second half. Jacob Heiston played a through ball into Thomas White and White took a touch with his right foot before quickly elevating his left-footed shot inside the far post.
A couple of minutes later, the action came to a halt as the game was stopped due to a lightning warning in the surrounding area. After a two-hour delay in action, the match restarted with 41:46 left in the match.
During the 54
th minute of play, Bridgewater played a ball over the top that an Eagle forward ran onto. The offensive pressure forced a Cougar defender to take down the Eagle forward in the box to force the head referee to whistle for a penalty kick. Fortunately for Averett, the ensuing penalty kick attempt went wide left to keep the Cougars within one.
The Eagles would end up capitalizing on their next scoring opportunity, though, two minutes later to extend their lead to 2-0. White crossed a ball from the near side of the field to the corner of the six-yard line box where Luke Stubbs came in and cleaned up the loose ball to give his team an insurance goal.
At this point, the Cougars increased their pressure going forward and it paid off for them as they outshot the Eagles 6-2 throughout the rest of the match. Unfortunately, Averett could not convert on these scoring chances as the Cougars ended up falling to Bridgewater, 2-0.
Averett hosts Ferrum College on Saturday in the first ever non-conference match between both sides as the Panthers moved to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference this past offseason. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
