DANVILLE, Va. — In the first game of what will be a five-game road slate, the Averett University women's soccer team suffered an 11-0 non-conference loss at Bridgewater College on Wednesday night.
Bridgewater (2-1) got off to a hot start and didn't look back, scoring its first goal in the fourth minute of the game. Bridgewater continued to move the ball well and capitalize off its opportunities, scoring four more goals, including one in the final seconds, and keeping the Cougars at bay as Averett (0-3) fell into a 5-0 deficit by the end of the first half.
Senior
Bailee Brown, who broke Averett's career saves record in the previous game against Randolph-Macon College, made three saves in the first half. Freshman
Morgann Dills made her debut in goal at the start of the second half and made two saves over the final 45 minutes.
Bridgewater struck early again in the second half, as Angel Finch slipped past the defense for the 1-on-1 goal to take a 6-0 lead at the 57-minute mark. The Eagles kept it going with five more goals in the next 14 minutes to make it a 11-0 game with 17 minutes remaining in the game and maintained that margin from there. Averett totaled three shots in the second half, two of which were on goal from freshmen
Ashley Ruelo and
Adriana Perez, while the Eagles tallied 12 shots in the second half.
The Cougars continue their road slate into the weekend as they travel to Demorest, Georgia, for the Piedmont College Invitational. As part of the tournament, Averett will face host Piedmont on Saturday at noon and Agnes Scott College on Sunday at noon.
