LEXINGTON, Va. — The Averett University men's wrestling team fell 37-6 to previously ranked Washington & Lee University on Wednesday night.
Sophomore
Sam Braswell gave Averett (6-9) the 3-0 lead in the dual with a 9-3 decision at 125 pounds. The Daytona Beach, Florida, native owned a 2-1 lead at the end of two periods and chose neutral heading into the final frame. Braswell would use this choice to his advantage as he recorded three takedowns in the third period to pull away for the victory.
Washington & Lee (8-3) won a close 6-4 decision at 133 pounds to tie the dual at three, but the Cougars would take the lead back with a 5-4 decision victory at 141 pounds. Alike Braswell, sophomore
Brandon Woody also had a 2-1 edge at the end of the second period. Woody would choose bottom, though, and escape to extend his lead to 3-1. However, Zach Bylykbashi would take Woody down to tie the bout at three. Woody kept wrestling and was rewarded as he was able to maneuver a reversal to retake the lead at 5-3 which proved to be just enough with the Chesterfield, Virginia, native winning 5-4 at the time of the final whistle.
Unfortunately, the Generals would keep Averett at bay throughout the rest of the night as Washington & Lee won the final seven bouts via four pins, two decisions and a major decision to claim the 37-6 victory.
