RALEIGH, N.C.
— In a USA South Conference tri-match, the Averett University volleyball team topped Pfeiffer University, 3-0, but fell to William Peace University, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Match 1
In the win over Pfeiffer (10-6, 1-4 USA South), the first set was highly contested, as Averett (9-10, 6-1 USA South) earned the 25-23 edge to take the 1-0 advantage. Set 2 was also a tight one, as the Cougars battled back down 12-7 to take the second set, 25-20. Averett completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third set.
Sophomore
Sarah Shropshire led the team with 12 kills, while senior
Madison Dadez was next up with 10 kills. Junior
McKenzie Miller notched a team-high 30 assists, sophomore
Zamyiah Mangum recorded a team-high 16 digs and freshman
Morgan Barnes notched eights kills while leading the team with six blocks.
Match 2
In a match that was closer than the score might suggest, the Cougars hung tough with William Peace (13-5, 3-2 USA South) in the first set, dropping it 25-23. After the Pacers took the second set 25-16, Averett again kept the third set competitive, but lost 25-23.
Shropshire and freshman
Lauren Montren shared the team lead with nine kills each, as Montren also tallied 10 digs. Meanwhile, Miller tacked on 28 assists and Mangum logged 16 digs.
The Cougars return to action Oct. 9 when they travel to Greensboro College at 7 p.m.
