DANVILLE, Va. — In its 2019 season opener, the Averett University men's lacrosse team fell to Bridgewater College, 25-2, on Wednesday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (0-1) played it close in the first quarter, holding Bridgewater (1-0) to three goals in the first quarter. However, the Eagles scored 11 goals in the second quarter and six more in the third to effectively put the game out of reach. The Cougars took 11 shots on the night, five on goal, while Bridgewater logged 53 shots and 34 on goal.
Sophomore
Joonas Mattila, the team's leading scorer among returning players from last season, scored the Cougars' first goal of the 2019 season with 11:35 remaining in the second quarter. Freshman
Parker Corbett scored the other goal for Averett, the first of his collegiate career, while the Cougars got assists from freshmen
Ballard Earley and
Mike Michaud. Sophomore
Jacob Shriver made nine saves in goal, while freshman
Sam Garrett led the team with six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Averett returns to action as it hosts Ferrum College on Feb. 20 at 5 p.m.
