MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team put together a late second half surge to beat Huntingdon College, 15-7.
Â
Huntingdon (1-6, 0-3 USA South) would win the race to the scoreboard as the Hawks collected a goal in the second minute of play to take the 1-0 lead. However, over the course of the next 4:47 of game time Averett (5-2, 1-0 USA South) tallied four unanswered goals to take the 4-1 lead. Junior
Abby Taylor, sophomore
Elizabeth Peasley and freshman
Courtney DeLone all scored during this time frame with Peasley being credited with two of the scores.
Â
Both sides would trade a pair of goals throughout the rest of the first half to run the score to 6-3 in favor of the Cougars going into the halftime break.
Â
At the 25:39 mark of the second half, the Hawks tallied their second straight goal to cut the Averett lead to one. Peasley recorded the 100th goal of her career about a minute later to push the Averett lead to 7-5.
Â
The Hawks would not go away, though, as they trimmed the Cougar lead to one at 7-6. Then after a pair of Averett goals, Huntingdon scored once again to trim the Averett advantage to 9-7 with 17:16 left in regulation.
Â
From here, Averett would pull away for the victory as the navy and gold registered six consecutive goals while keeping Huntingdon scoreless throughout the rest of the match to win 15-7.
Â
The Cougars held the advantage in draw controls (15-9) and ground balls (21-15). In addition, Averett was efficient in their attacking third as 30 of their 38 total shots came on frame. Â
Â
Peasley finished the game with eight goals and an assist which brings her to 104 goals for her career. This moves the Wilmington, North Carolina, native closer to the all-time program record of 106 goals set by Darcie Jones (2005-07).
Â
Senior
Alixis Roccia, Taylor and DeLone each had two goals with Roccia and DeLone tallying two assists a piece.
Â
Averett is back in action on Sunday at LaGrange College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
