GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Averett University men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Greensboro College on the road in the USA South Conference opener.
Averett (5-1, 1-0 USA South) jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage following doubles play as junior
Nicolas Yanes and freshman
Patrick Shields beat Philp Deutsch and Nicholas Coleman 8-0 at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore
Simon Levinsson and junior
Mathias Reusch defeated Landon Murray and Paul Bauberger 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
The Cougars would win No. 3 doubles by default, taking a commanding 3-0 lead into singles action.
Greensboro (0-1, 0-1 USA South) would drop for of six singles matches with the last two singles points going in favor of the Cougars by default.
Shields cruised past Deutsch 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while freshman
Luis Chen beat Bauberger 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Averett would shuffle the lineup over its final four matches as Reusch moved up from No. 4 to No. 3 singles to beat Murray 6-0, 6-0, while sophomore
Alvaro Jimenez won 6-0, 6-0 over Coleman at No. 4 singles.
The Cougars would win No. 5 and No. 6 singles by default to take the match 9-0, earning their fifth straight victory of the 2018-19 season.
Averett is back in action Sunday at it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to play Shaw University at 1 p.m.
