DEMOREST, Ga. — The Averett University volleyball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories Saturday on the road against Piedmont College and Reinhardt University.
Game 1:
After dropping the first set 25-16, Averett (2-7) rebounded to take the second set by the final of 25-18, aided by 12 kills in the frame to even the game at 1-1.
The Cougars would go up 2-1 following the third set, beating Piedmont 25-21 and taking the match 3-1 with a 25-19 fourth set edge.
Sophomore
Sarah Shropshire and freshman
Morgan Barnes paced the club with a game-high 11 kills apiece for the match, while Barnes finished with a match-high .409 hitting percentage.
Junior
McKenzie Miller added a game-high 37 assists, while sophomore
Zamyiah Mangum racked up a career-high 22 digs and freshman
Lauren Montren added 19 scopes.
Game 2:
The Cougars would continue momentum from their opening day victory, despite dropping a highly contested 25-23 Set 1 to Reinhardt. Averett came back winning 25-12 in dominating fashion in the second set to even the match at 1-1.
The Cougars rolled off another impressive 25-13 victory in set three to take a 2-1 edge, but Reinhardt evened the match at 2-2 with a 25-21 set four victory.
However, a .385 hitting percentage in a deciding Set 5 aided the Cougars to a 15-11 Set 5 and match victory.
Miller and Monten recorded career-best performances for Averett as Miller assisted on a career-high 55 kills and Montren connected for 23 of those kills. Montren finished with an impressive .426 hitting percentage for the match, adding 23 digs.
Barnes and Shropshire added double-digit kill outputs for the match as Shropshire finished with 11 and Barnes added 10.
Mangum would beat her previous career-high in digs set in game one with a career best 25 scopes against Reinhardt.
Junior
Myka Patterson recorded 15 digs, while senior
Madison Dadez added eight kills.
Averett returns to the court on Wednesday when it hosts the University of Lynchburg at 7 p.m.
