STERLING, Va. — Averett University wrestling senior Sam Braswell continued to add to his already impressive resume by earning a 3-1 overtime win over Ferrum College's Levi Englman as part of the main card Sunday at Top of the Podium Wrestling's Vengeance in Virginia, which featured some of the top high school wrestlers in the state.

"It was a chess match," said Braswell, who is ranked No. 4 in Division III at 125 points by Flowrestling. "Levi is a great technical wrestler so I knew I had to be more precise with my attacks. It felt good to see how far I have come because Levi beat me in high school."

Englman is ranked No. 6 at 133 points by Flowrestling in its 2020-21 Division III rankings.

"It was a great win against a very tactically sound opponent in Levi," Averett wrestling head coach Blake Roulo said. "I mean at one point the kid was ranked No. 1 in the nation at 133. For Braswell to win just shows the amount of work and time he dedicates to his craft. Hats off to both of them for accepting the challenge."

Braswell looked at the exhibition as "just another match" and an "opportunity to progress." But in terms of the bigger picture, being asked to wrestle as the main event is not only an indication of his success, but also Averett's as a blossoming program that just began a little more than three years ago.

"I believe it shows how far we've come as a program and the progression we are making from tournament to tournament," Braswell said.

Roulo agreed about the exposure for both Braswell and Averett's program.

"The experience was spectacular being the main event of a card that featured some of the best high school wrestlers in the state of Virginia, and it really shows how far we have come as a program in just 3 1/2 years," Roulo said. "I'm proud that Averett could help put on an all-star match for the Virginia wrestling community and help give these wrestlers motivation for better days ahead."
