ATLANTA, Ga. — In its 2020 season opener, the Averett University men's lacrosse team lost to Oglethorpe University in a hard fought game, 8-5, on the road on Saturday.

Oglethorpe (1-0) scored the first goal of the day before junior Nate Hann answered for Averett (0-1) later in the first quarter to tie the game at 1-1, a score that held going into the second quarter. The Cougars then scored two goals early in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead, with Hann and sophomore Ballard Earley both scoring. However, the Stormy Petrels fired back with three goals in the final five minutes of the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead heading into halftime.

Oglethorpe added a fifth goal early in the third quarter before sophomore Mason Foy scored off an assist from Hann to make it a tight 5-4 game heading into the fourth quarter. The Stormy Petrels opened the final quarter with three straight goals to put the game out of reach before Hann scored the final goal with just under six minutes remaining to end the game at 8-5.

In his first game with the Cougars, Hann led the team with three goals and two assists, breaking the program's single-game scoring record with five points on the day. Earley added one goal and one assist with three shots while Foy scored once off of two shots on goal. Junior Jacob Shriver made 16 saves in goal, while junior Miska Granlund and sophomores Marques Fleming and Michael Kravalis shared the team lead with three ground balls each.

Averett gets a couple of weeks off before returning to action on Feb. 19, when it travels to Ferrum College for a road game, set to start at 7 p.m.
