DANVILLE, Va. — Senior
Johnny Kummander's two-goal evening lifts Averett University men's soccer past Southern Virginia University 3-2 in USA South Conference action.
Averett (8-6-1, 4-1-1 USA South) used nearly the entire opening half to get on the board, but a Southern Virignia (3-12-0, 2-4-0 USA South) yellow card with 15 seconds remaining put the Cougars within striking distance. Freshman
Orion Mills attempted a shot that was deflected and landed at the foot of Kummander who found the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.
The Knights scored early in the second half to tie the match 1-1 before benefitting from an own goal in the 52nd minute to take a 2-1 edge.
However, Mills tied the game 2-2 in the 68th minute on a break away that beat the goalie left from 15 yards out and Kummander wasted no time giving the Cougars a 3-2 advantage just over a minute later when he collected a long pass from senior
Erik Blick that allowed Kummander to score his second goal on the evening.
With his two-goal performance, Kummander tied sophomore
Agustin Jaraba for the team lead with six goals and took the team lead with 14 points. Mills picked up his first collegiate assist in the win while also scoring his third goal.
Averett closes out the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Greensboro, North Carolina for a 4 p.m. meeting with Greensboro College.
