DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball program earned its first win of the year in the conference opener 74-68 over Pfeiffer University on Tuesday night inside the Grant Center. The victory was also the first at Averett for first-year head coach Desireé Driver.
Averett (1-6 1-0 USA South) was led by senior
Genesis Weiters, who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while fellow senior
Camryn Lunsford led the team with 17 points to go with eight rebounds.
The Cougars stormed out to a 20-9 lead by the end of the first quarter. Pfeiffer (3-2, 0-1 USA South) crawled back within six before the halftime break.
A back-and-forth second half with many turnovers and fouls ended with senior
Rana Davis-Robinson on the line attempting to ice the game. With Lunsford fouled out, the Falcons went on an 8-1 run to pull within three. Davis-Robinson, who tallied six points and eight rebounds, knocked down two clutch free throws with 12.9 seconds left.
Averett is back in action next Tuesday, Nov. 30, when it travels to conference foe Meredith College with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
