DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball program saw a late comeback fall short to Greensboro College 68-64 Friday night in the Grant Center. Junior
Genesis Weiters posted an 18 point and 10 rebound night but fouled out late to give the Pride a chance to close the door.
Averett (4-7, 4-7 USA South) closed out the first period with a 7-0 run taking a 14-9 lead into the second quarter. Greensboro (2-7, 2-7 USA South) faced an eight-point deficit with 6:40 remaining until halftime after the Cougars saw a three fall from freshman
Demi Case who had five points and two rebounds. Greensboro then answered with four straight three-pointers going on a 21-5 run to end the quarter. The Pride lead 32-24 at the break.
The Cougars won the second chance points battle 17-1 along with points in the paint with 34 over the Pride's 18. Averett began the third quarter with a quick 7-0 run to get within one. Greensboro went into the final quarter of play with a six-point advantage.
The Cougars struck within one with 4:51 remaining to play after junior
Camryn Lunsford knocked down two free throws. Lunsford had 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists. With a minute left to play freshman
Shunte Bethea, who had eight points and six rebounds, created a turnover and finished a fast break layup to cut the Greensboro lead to just two. With fouls down the stretch the Pride took advantage of the free throws and closed out the Cougars 68-64.
Averett was also led by junior
Courtney Hunt who added 11 points.
Greensboro was led by Lauren Livingston, who had 20 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists.
Averett returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Greensboro College for a 4 p.m. matchup.
