Brophy's walk-off RBI splits baseball's USA South doubleheader against Pfeiffer

DANVILLE, Va. — Freshman Brandt Brophy knocked in the game-winning run in Averett University baseball's doubleheader USA South Conference split with Pfeiffer University on Saturday, winning game two 4-3 after dropping the opener 9-1.

Averett (4-15, 3-6 USA South) managed to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning after freshman Logan Albertson walked and junior Avery Spicer reached via and infield single. A wild pitch allowed Albertson and Spicer to advance to second and third and Pfeiffer (7-6, 3-2 USA South) elected to intentionally walk sophomore Kyle Wilson to load the bases.

That's when Brophy ripped an RBI single through the right side after the Falcons elected to play the infield in to score Albertson for the winning run.

Senior Kyle Lamantia picked up win on the mound for the Cougars after entering for senior Ryan Traylor who got the start for Averett.

Traylor pitched eight solid innings for the Cougars, scattering 12 hits and allowing three runs while striking out six.

Lamantia gave up just one hit in his inning of work, however it proved to be one of the deciding plays in Saturday's doubleheader as it allowed freshman Zelgin Jackson to show off his arm,  throwing out the go-ahead run at the plate for the final out of the top of the ninth.

The Cougars opened game two with a 1-0 lead after sophomore Nolan Maccabe scored in the first inning.

Pfeiffer took a 2-1 edge with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Averett tied it with a run in the fifth inning when Maccabe scored Brophy on an RBI sacrifice fly out to center field.

Averett tallied another run in the sixth to regain the lead, however the Falcons tied the contest 3-3 with a run in the seventh inning.

Brophy finished an impressive 3-3 at the plate in game two, reaching base safely in all five at bats thanks in part to two walks. Wilson finished 2-4, while Maccabe added a 2-3 performance.

Additionally, Averett swiped five bases in the win and walked a total of nine times.

In game one, Pfeiffer managed to take a 3-0 advantage early, thanks in part to two runs in the second inning and another run in the third before the Cougars got on the board with a run in the sixth.

Freshman Ryan Scheiderer drove in Jackson on an RBI single to center field, recording his first collegiate RBI, however the Falcons benefitted from a two-run homerun in the seventh, followed by three runs in the eighth and another run in the ninth to pick up the 9-1 victory.

Jackson and junior Brandon Hatcher each added a pair of hits apiece in the loss, while Brophy recorded his first career triple.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday when they host Roanoke College at 4 p.m. from Owen-Fulton Field.
