Women's tennis opens 2021-22 play at Methodist Fall Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Averett University women's tennis opened play at the Methodist University Fall Invitational on Friday afternoon and concluded the tournament on Sunday.

Averett picked up its first win in the No. 3 singles consolation match when freshman Keira Gunning defeated Valeria Matute from Methodist University 8-7, (7-3).

In round one of the Flight 4 singles, senior Inka Zeilstra took down Methodist University's Kamdyn Balko 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 1-0, (10-5). In her third place match, Zeilstra beat Sydni Lewis from Methodist University as well, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (14-12). In the 5th place match of the Flight 4 singles, sophomore Paula Ryhsen earned a victory over Veva Willocks from Methodist University 6-4, 6-3.

Additionally, the Cougars earned a third-place finish in flight 5 of singles as junior Alejandra Garcia beat Natalie Collins of Methodist University 6-4, 6-1. Linnea Sjostrom Krook defeated Charlize Martinez from Methodist University 6-3, 6-1, to take third place in Flight 6 singles as well. Nakia-Lee Goodall earned 5th place in the same flight after defeated Ellie Osborne of Meredith College 6-0, 6-4.

In doubles action, the duo of Garcia and Ryhsen fell 8-6 in the championship match of Flight 3 earning a second-place finish. 

The Cougars are back in action when they compete in the ITA Fall Regionals hosted by the University Mary Washington on Sep. 25.
