FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Averett University men's tennis opened play at the Methodist University Fall Invitational on Saturday afternoon with doubles rounds and concluded the tournament with singles rounds Sunday and Monday.
In Flight 1 singles, Averett sophomore
Josh Bottrell fell to Methodist University's Jordan Theron, 6-0, 6-0. Bottrell also fell to Guilford College's Drake Schreiber and Jay Montague throughout the Flight 1 singles.
In Flight 2 singles, junior
Evgeniy Bogdasaryan also lost to Methodist University's E.J. Stolmeijer, 6-1, 6-3. Bogdasaryan then picked up a win over Barton College's Diego Agudelo before falling to Gregory Normand from the University of Mount Olive.
In Flight 3 singles freshman
Mattes Wobbeler dropped his round one match to the University of Mount Olive's Diego Ortego Cadahia, 6-0, 6-1.
Averett sophomore
Maksim Sukhomlinov was able to go 2-1 in the Flight 4 singles matches picking up wins over Methodist University's Trey Hardersen, 6-4, 6-4, and Dominik Pocrnja from Guilford College 3-6, 6-4, 1-0, (10-1). Fellow sophomore
Aleki Gomez also picked up two wins in the Flight 5 singles over Spencer Kieft from Methodist University 5-7, 6-2, 1-0, (10-6). While also taking down James Rodriguez from Barton College 2-6, 6-2, 1-0, (10-8).
In Flight 6 singles, freshman
Vinzenz Oeri went 2-1 with wins over Samir Tewari from Methodist University 6-1, 6-0, and defeated Aguirre Arana from Barton College 6-1, 6-1. While in the Flight 7 singles, sophomore
Philipp Bohnenkamp went 3-0 picking up wins over Royce South from Methodist University 6-0, 6-0, Quijin Li from Barton College 6-3, 6-3, and Thiago Bertolani from the University of Mount Olive 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, the duo of Bottrell and Wobbeler defeated Drake Schreiber and Jay Montague from Guilford College 8-3 in Flight 1 doubles.
The Cougars are back in action when they host Methodist University Sep. 19 at 1 p.m.
