Kummander's game-winner propels men’s soccer past Hampden-Sydney

DANVILLE, Va. — Senior Johnny Kummander capped off an incredible second half run for the Averett University men's soccer team, scoring the game-winning goal with 1:15 remaining on the clock to knock off Hampden-Sydney College 3-2 in non-conference action on Wednesday.

Hampden-Sydney (1-1) took a 1-0 lead following a goal in the 30th minute and extended its advantage to 2-0 with a goal early in the second half at the 61st minute.

However, Averett (2-2) took back momentum just over two minutes later when sophomore Agustin Jaraba scored off a free kick to cut within 2-1 of the Tigers. Jaraba managed to curve a ball past a diving keeper from the 20-yard line for his second goal on the year.

The Cougars tied the game 2-2 in the 69th minute when Kummander placed an incredible pass at the feet of senior Lluc Pou you blasted a shot for his second goal of the season. The goal came on a 3-on-1 break away for Averett as Kummander faked a pass right and found Pou coming up the left side for the one-timer strike.

Kummander finished things off for the Cougars with time winding down as he benefited himself from a cross, this time off the foot of sophomore Rion Klaas from the right corner of the field. Kummander spun around a defender and put the game-winner in the low right side of the net.

After only accounting for two shots in the first half, Averett turned things around in the second half, firing 12 shots and landing 10 shots on frame for the game capitalizing with three goals.

Sophomore Tyler Yates recorded four saves in net for the Cougars, turning away two goal scoring opportunities for the Tigers late to help keep the game dead locked at two goals apiece. Allowing Kummander an opportunity to send Averett away with the win.

Averett returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan University for a 4:30 p.m. showdown.
